Watch: Three Extremely Human Tactics Taika Waititi Uses to Make His Stories Relatable

The ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ director revels in humanity.

Sometimes the only road to true realism goes right through the imagination. Take, for instance, the work of Taika Waititi. His films show like slice-of-life dramas someone wrote in an unconscious state, dropping elements and storytelling techniques into them that could only be found in dreams. In so doing, Waititi has made himself one of the world’s most popular directors. How you get from the dark, dark humor of Things We Do in the Shadows, which he co-directed, to Thor: Ragnarok, his latest, a blockbuster, is probably best left his secret. And yet there are a few elements we can observe that help tell the story, and this video from YouTube channel We Need to Talk About Film helps sort them out elegantly and gracefully.

Run, Pray, Hide: Three New TV Spots for Ridley Scott’s ‘Alien: Covenant’

Alien: Covenant TV Spots

“All of this, to start our new life.” Yes! Only one month to go. 20th Century Fox has released three new TV spots for Ridley Scott’s return to the Alien universe (following Prometheus), with Alien: Covenant. These spots are titled “Run”, “Pray”, and “Hide”, which is the perfect way to tease this movie – the same taglines they’ve used on the teaser posters as well. The huge ensemble cast of this sci-fi thriller includes: Michael Fassbender, Katherine Waterston, James Franco, Billy Crudup, Danny McBride, Carmen Ejogo, Callie Hernandez, Demián Bichir, Jussie Smollett, Uli Latukefu, Benjamin Rigby, and Amy Seimetz. These are short, but sweet TV spots, with just the right amount of footage and scares and thrills. The marketing for this movie has been pitch perfect so far, I just hope the movie lives up to the hype. ›››

First Trailer for McDonagh’s ‘Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri’

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri Trailer

“All this anger, man… It just begets greater anger.” Fox Searchlight has revealed an official trailer for the new dark comedy from filmmaker Martin McDonagh, of the movies In Bruges and Seven Psychopaths previously. The title is Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, which is quite an impressive title for a film, but I like it because it is so unique. The film is about exactly what the title says – three billboards outside of the town of Ebbing, Missouri that are purchased by a local resident who is upset about a lack of any progress from the police to discover who murdered her daughter. Frances McDormand stars as the woman at the center of it all, and the exceptional ensemble cast also includes Sam Rockwell, Woody Harrelson, Abbie Cornish, Kathryn Newton, Peter Dinklage, John Hawkes, and Lucas Hedges. This seems like it’s going to be such an outstanding film, perhaps a big sleeper hit if it’s as good as it looks. ›››

Superstore Has Been Renewed for Season Three

Superstore season 3 is heading to NBC.

NBC has officially announced Superstore season 3

There’s some great news today for fans of NBC‘s Superstore as the network has revealed that the Justin Spitzer comedy will return for a third season with another 22 half hour episodes.

Superstore centers around Amy (America Ferrera), the store’s most stalwart employee as well as the glue holding the place together. Jonah (Ben Feldman), who is often the target of his colleagues ribbing, is joined on the floor with his fellow associates, including sardonic Garrett (Colton Dunn), the ambitious Mateo (Nico Santos) and sweet teenager and new mom Cheyenne (Nichole Bloom). Overseeing the store is Glenn (Mark McKinney), the affable, clueless store manager, and Dina (Lauren Ash), the aggressive assistant manager who enforces Cloud 9 policy with an iron fist.

From the bright-eyed newbies and the seen-it-all veterans, to the clueless seasonal hires and the in-it-for-life managers, together they hilariously tackle the day-to-day grind of rabid bargain hunters, riot-causing sales and nap-worthy training sessions.

“We are extremely proud of ‘Superstore,’ which is one of the smartest and funniest comedies on television today,” said Jennifer Salke, President, NBC Entertainment. “Through the show’s expertly drawn characters, our producers and cast do a remarkable job touching on many issues in which audiences can relate. To its credit, not only does ‘Superstore’ make us laugh, but it makes us think as well.”

So far this season, Superstore originals have averaged a 1.8 rating in adults 18-49 and 5.7 million viewers overall in “live plus seven day” ratings from Nielsen Media Research, lifting the network +29% above its 1.4 average in the Thursday 8 p.m. half-hour last season in 18-49 (excluding sports). Last summer a special post-Olympic telecast of Superstore delivered 9.7 million viewers, making it broadcast TV’s most-watched Friday comedy in 12 years.

Last season Superstore ranked as NBC’s #1 show on digital platforms, generating more than 33 million full-episode views on Hulu, and video on demand.

Superstore was created and written by Justin Spitzer, who also serves as an executive producer with director Ruben Fleischer, David Bernad and Gabe Miller & Jonathan Green. Superstore is produced by Universal Television, Spitzer Holding Company and The District.
