Saban Films has debuted an official US trailer for the zombie horror adaptation The Girl with All the Gifts, which already opened in the UK last year. The story is about a girl, named Melanie, who is being kept at a military base that is one of the only remaining safe havens in a zombie apocalypse. When the base it overtaken, she goes on the run with a few other people, attempting to survive in a hostile world. The movie stars Sennia Nanua as Melanie, along with Gemma Arterton, Glenn Close and Paddy Considine. I saw this film at a genre festival in Berlin last year and really enjoyed it, one of the most refreshingly original updates to the zombie genre I’ve seen in a while. I highly recommend it, for the performances alone. This US trailer contains some spoilers and crops the footage, but the UK trailer is still available to watch. Have fun. ›››
Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: a longtime couple finds that the spark has gone out of their marriage, and begin seeking satisfaction in outside affairs. One thing leads to another, the new relationships grow more serious, and it looks like the marriage is about to be over for good. So far, so familiar, right?
But then Azazel Jacobs‘ The Lovers throws a curveball. In this film, the couple, played by Tracy Letts and Debra Winger, unexpectedly find that their extramarital activities have rekindled the passion within the marriage. It’s not long before the spouses find themselves cheating on the people that they were cheating on each other with (played by Aidan Gillen and Melora Waters. Watch The Lovers trailer below.
The Lovers Trailer
Surprisingly, The Lovers hasn’t hit the festival circuit at all, so your guess is as good as anyone’s as to how this film is going to turn out. The trailer, though, looks pretty promising. Jacobs is an indie filmmaker who’s probably best known for Terri, an underseen coming-of-age dramedy that went beyond the usual “misunderstood teen” tropes to deliver something charming and poignant, and it looks like he’s taken a similar approach to The Lovers. Lord knows the world could use some more good romantic comedies, so I’ll be keeping this one on my radar. The Lovers opens May 5.
Written and Directed by Azazel Jacobs, THE LOVERS is a refreshing, funny look at love, fidelity, and family, starring Debra Winger and Tracy Letts as a long-married and completely dispassionate husband and wife. Both are in the midst of serious affairs and are increasingly committed to their new partners. But on the brink of officially calling it quits, a spark between them suddenly and unexpectedly reignites, leading them into an impulsive romance that forces them to navigate the hilarious complications of “cheating” on their respective lovers. A mixture of humor and powerful emotion, the story is a uniquely honest take on modern marriage.

“Meet George Jetson!” For years and years, we’ve been writing about the hope/possibility of one day seeing a live-action Jetsons movies. At one point, Robert Rodriguez was attached to a version in development at Warner Bros, but it never came together. Now we can get a different glimpse at what a movie might be like. Engineering firm Arconic hired filmmaker Justin Lin (Annapolis, Tokyo Drift, Fast & Furious 4-6, Star Trek Beyond) to make a 60-second commercial for them reimagining The Jetsons set in the year 2062. It’s actually pretty cool to see, but it’s clearly just an advertisement (showing off lots of engineering innovation) and they also clearly only have the rights to The Jetsons song, so it’s all just for fun. Still worth a quick look. ›››

There have been conversations surrounding a live-action version of The Jetsons for many years now. For a while, Robert Rodriguez was attached to direct, and he even shot some tests for the film. He left the project before returning to it, but for unknown reasons, he exited the director’s chair a second time. Last year, Warner Bros. got the ball rolling on an animated Jetsons film, but we’ve heard little about it since. It looks like we won’t see a live-action Jetsons movie anytime soon, despite Yeezy’s best efforts, but at least we can see director Justin Lin (Star Trek Beyond) bring the Jetson family to real life in an ad.
Below, check out Justin Lin’s The Jetsons live-action commercial.
The Furious 6 director and Arconic teamed up for this fun reimagining of the popular 1960s cartoon, which saw a resurgence in the 1980s, thanks to reruns, and led to a 1990 animated movie which underperformed at the box-office. In this version of The Jetsons, George Jetson and Jane work for Arconic, while Judy attends architecture classes in Paris and Elroy goes to school in San Francisco.
Here’s Justin Lin’s The Jetsons live-action commercial, which already has over three million views on YouTube:
On Arconic’s website, the company explained why they chose The Jetsons to represent their forward-thinking approach:
The Jetsons sci-fi cartoon series launched in 1962 and was set 100 years in the future. An instant hit, it presented an entertaining yet surprisingly forward-thinking vision of 2062. It’s amazing to see how much The Jetsons got right, predicting things like smartwatches, tablets and 3D printing; and that made us wonder what else might still be in store. Flying cars? Extraordinary buildings? So we gathered a brain trust of leading futurists and our own engineers to share their thoughts on what Arconic could help realize in 2062, and brought their vision to life with the help of film director Justin Lin.
Here’s a behind-the-scenes video for Lin’s commercial, featuring some predictions for the future of cars, buildings, and more:
Framestore handled the ad’s visual effects, which are very impressive. They most recently worked on Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, and their work here is excellent. The commercial has some playful ideas and effects, capturing what you’d want to see from a modern live-action version of The Jetsons. It’s also always great to see daytime science-fiction. Focusing on a bright, sunny day feels right for a commercial about forward-thinking. Also, while Astro isn’t in the commercial, there is a nice little nod to the Jetsons family’s dog.
