UK company sold spy tools to the repressive governments battling the ‘Arab Spring’

TwitterFacebook

A UK company sold surveillance tools to authoritarian governments that could be used to stamp out signs of dissent.

BAE Systems, according to an investigation conducted by the BBC and the Danish newspaper Dagbladet Information, began shopping surveillance tools to governments in the Middle East after they bought a Danish company called ETI, which built a surveillance system known as “Evident.”

That purchase happened in January 2011, around the same time of popular uprisings in several Middle Eastern nations that came to be collectively known as the “Arab Spring.”

Today’s Poem

Larson’s Holstein Bull

By Jim Harrison

Death waits inside us for a door to open.
Death is patient as a dead cat.
Death is a doorknob made of flesh.
Death is that angelic farm girl
gored by the bull on her way home
from school, crossing the pasture
for a shortcut. In the seventh grade
she couldn’t read or write. She wasn’t a virgin.
She was “simpleminded,” we all said.
It was May, a time of lilacs and shooting stars.
She’s lived in my memory for sixty years.
Death steals everything except our stories.

While I suppose a poem about death is not something one would ordinarily consider to be inspirational, this is different. First, it’s written by the great novelist (“Legends of the Fall”), essayist, and poet Jim Harrison who died last year in his home in Arizona. He was 78 years old. Second, it’s a powerful poem which reminds us of two things: Each of us is born with an expiration date. And “Death steals everything except our stories.”

Stories transcend death. See if that doesn’t inspire you in writing your current story.

“Steal Away” is an old African-American slave song and is thought to have been used as a code related to escape attempts. Sung here in a recording from 1957 by the great Mahalia Jackson, then joined by Nat King Cole. What an amazing voice she had!

Joseph Campbell was born on March 26, 1904 and to celebrate his birthday, check out the conversation in the video above with one of the great thinkers about Story, Creativity, and Life.

Campbell said: “Follow your bliss. The bliss is the message of God to yourself. That’s where your life is”. As writers, we follow our bliss every time we sit down to engage our stories. In that enthusiasm, we come alive.
