Will Smith (I Am Legend) has been on the long-gestating project and reportedly spoke to Martin Lawrence (Big Momma’s House) about it. “I saw Martin a few weeks ago,” Smith told BBC 1 in February 2016 (via The Verge). “I haven’t seen him for about two years. We just looked at each other. We hugged. In that moment, we knew we were making another ‘Bad Boys.’ We’re definitely doing another one.”

‘Pacific Rim Uprising’ Gets a New Release Date

Pacific Rim Uprising Release Date

It turns out that you’ll have to wait a little bit longer to watch Star Wars: The Force Awakens star John Boyega pilot a giant robot so he can punch monsters in the face. Pacific Rim Uprising, the upcoming sequel to Guillermo del Toro’s incredibly entertaining 2013 science fiction adventure, has been pushed back. But just a little bit. A teensy bit.

Deadline reports that Pacific Rim Uprising will now open on March 23, 2017, one month later than the original February 23, 2017 release Universal had set for the film. No official reason has been given for the delay, but it could be any number of things – the filmmakers realized they needed a little more time to finish the movie, marketing research suggested that March is kinder to movies about robots smashing alien monsters, etc. Who knows?

The only peculiar thing about this release date change is that March is a far more crowded month for geek fare like this. Sure, the original release date would have seen Steven S. DeKnight‘s sequel dealing with fallout from Marvel’s Black Panther (which is going to be an enormous hit), but this is very much an “out of the frying pan and into the fire” situation. In its new release date, Pacific Rim Uprising will have to contend with Lionsgate’s new Robin Hood movie before going head-to-head with Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One the following week.

In any case, Universal seems to think they have a potential franchise here. The first film, as fun as it was, underperformed in the United States while making a pretty penny on the international stage. Perhaps this new release date has less to do with the film’s domestic prospects and more to do with positioning it as a global blockbuster. While it’s disappointing to see del Toro no longer in the director’s seat here (The Shape of Water looks preeeeetty good though) DeKnight has proven himself to be a capable force on the small screen, working on shows like Daredevil and the shockingly great Spartacus. I’m very curious to see what this movie looks like and how audiences respond to it.

John Boyega headlines Pacific Rim Uprising as the son of Idris Elba’s character from the first movie. Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day and Burn Gorman are set to return from the original ensemble, with Scott Eastwood, Jing Tian, Cailee Spaeny, and Adria Arjona joining the line-up. As always, the giant monsters will be played by pixels and many late nights at a visual effects company. You can watch the first teaser for the film right here.

By the Power of Grayskull! Masters of the Universe Movie Sets 2019 Release

The Masters of the Universe movie has a release date. Look for the Masters of the Universe movie to arrive December 18, 2019.

Sony Pictures has set new release dates for Angry Birds 2 and the Masters of the Universe movie

Sony Pictures has today updated its release calendar, adding two major releases to the schedule. Look for the animated sequel Angry Birds 2 to arrive September 20, 2019 with McG’s Masters of the Universe movie following on December 18, 2019. The still untitled animated Spider-Man movie sees a slight shift, too, moving one week earlier to December 14, 2018.

Masters of the Universe follows Prince Adam, who has the ability to transform into a warrior called He-Man. As He-Man, Adam becomes the last hope for a magical land called Eternia, ravaged by technology and the evil Skeletor.

McG, who is directing the Masters of the Universe movie, recently spoke with CS about his plans for the fantastic world of He-Man.

Originally launched as a popular Mattel toy line in 1982, “Masters of the Universe” spawned several animated series (including the female-driven spinoff cartoon series, “She-Ra: Princess of Power”) along with a 1987 live-action film. Directed by Gary Goddard, the first Masters of the Universe movie stars Dolph Lundgren as He-Man, Frank Langella as Skeletor and, in one of her very first big screen roles, a young Courteney Cox as Julie Winston, a teenage character created specifically for the film.

“I think we want to honor the fan base, first and foremost,” he said. “We also need to be cognizant of the incredible resonance of what Kevin Feige is doing with Marvel, and the balance of full-bodied entertainment. That it’s both credible and emotional, action-packed, and the story of a hero’s journey. It’s the genesis of He-Man, it’s the becoming of He-Man. We want it to be clicking on all cylinders in that regard. We’re not going to stop until we get it right.”

The December 18, 2019 release date will see the Masters of the Universe movie opening just two days before both Universal Pictures’ Broadway adaptation Wicked and a mystery live action Walt Disney Pictures fairy tale film. Angry Birds 2, meanwhile, is the first film to claim that date. The animated Spider-Man, then, is now set to face off against Universal’s Mortal Engines.

All Four ‘Avatar’ Sequels Receive New Release Dates as Production Begins

It’s become a running joke by now: they set a date for Avatar 2 and then, after months (or years!) of nothing, it gets delayed. The sequel to the highest grossing film of all time was originally supposed to arrive in 2014…and then it was pushed back to 2016…and then it was pushed back to 2018. So when writer/director James Cameron revealed that the film wasn’t going to meet that last date, no one even blinked. Of course Avatar 2 wasn’t going to be released next year!

Because it’s going to be released in three years. Production has officially begun on the four sequels to the 2009 original, with the first movie now due out in 2020.

The news was revealed on the official Avatar Facebook page, where Cameron posed for a picture with his crew and announced the start of concurrent production on Avatar 2, Avatar 3, Avatar 4, and Avatar 5. There have been many conversations about whether or not audiences will care about this series by the time a new one arrives, but Cameron is a wily fellow – whether we want them or not, four more Avatar movies are coming and they’re filming at the same time.

Avatar 2 is due out on December 18, 2020 and Avatar 3 will follow a year later on December 17, 2021. After a three year gap, Avatar 4 will arrive on December 20, 2024 and Avatar 5 will wrap everything up on December 19, 2015. Here’s the official statement:

Great to be working with the best team in the business! Avatar takes flight as we begin concurrent production on four sequels. The journey continues December 18, 2020December 17, 2021December 20, 2024 and December 19, 2025!

This announcement arrives at a key moment for this franchise. Walt Disney World is set to open the Pandora: The World of Avatar next month and all eyes are on it, with pop culture enthusiasts and major corporations alike wondering if it will draw the same kind of attention as other recent theme park endeavors. In the unlikely event that tourists simply reject Pandora, Cameron will still have the last laugh – cameras have already started rolling.

And while one of the internet’s major pastimes involves everyone rolling their eyes at the original Avatar, you can’t ignore that $ 2.7 billion gross and you can’t ignore the fact that James Cameron has always been one step ahead of just about everyone else in Hollywood’s orbit. He’s always given the people what they want and he’s always proved his naysayers wrong. I’m the camp that enjoys Avatar but also can’t say I’m ecstatic about four sequels at the moment. However, I look forward to Cameron making me care. He’s pretty, pretty good at that.
