Watch: Powerful Polish Short Film ‘Everything Will Be Nice’ Set in NYC

Everything Will Be Nice Short Film

“Where is that money, Piotrek?” We’re proud to exclusively debut an award-winning short film online, titled Everything Will Be Nice, or Wszystko Bedzie Fajnie in Polish. This short, directed by and starring Polish actor/filmmaker Jan Kutrzeba, touches on immigration, love, trust, poverty, and loneliness. It was made out of love by a handful of immigrant filmmakers and two talented Polish actors living in New York. Kutrzeba “wanted to share the story of what it’s truly like for immigrants trying to make it to the next day in the city, surviving solely on the love the characters share with each other.” It was shot and it’s presented as one long, single-take involving a Polish couple arguing at the morning in their apartment in the city. This is an impressive short, that played at a number of film festivals last year. It’s worth taking a moment to watch. ›››

Learn the Basics of Using Color as a Powerful Storytelling Device

Color is one of the most powerful tools you’ll use as a filmmaker.

How do you tell a story? If you’re a filmmaker you know that you have so much more than the written word at your disposal. You have dialogue, camera movement, framing, costuming, set design, and editing all there waiting to inform and entertain your audience. But there is one very powerful narrative element that should never go unnoticed on any film production: color.

In this video, JP Caldeano of CINEMATICJ explains basic color theory, as well as how filmmakers can use color as a powerful storytelling device.

Caldeano does a great job of breaking down basic color theory for those who may not know much about it, but he also brings up a great point for those who may have more experience working with color with their films. It’s something that seems pretty simple but it actually goes unnoticed rather easily in the chaos of film production.

Get Powerful Color Tools for Free from Baselight

Baselight remains a force in high-end color grading, and with the new free license for students, it’s more accessible than ever.

Producing the best quality software doesn’t always win companies a user base. They also need a large body of skilled users—and a pipeline of new users learning to use your product to bring in as assistants—to have a chance at a market share. As we saw a decade ago with Final Cut 7 taking a huge bite out of Avid because so many students learned it in school, software companies need to ensure that the next wave of filmmakers knows how to use their platform. Blackmagic Da Vinci Resolve offers its software for free, then makes money off licenses for the full software and hardware accessories.

FilmLight will now be offering a free version of Baselight for students, though the company will be taking a much different approach.

First woman to run Boston Marathon returns, and this time she has another powerful message

TwitterFacebook

Fifty years ago, a clever, determined woman named Kathrine Switzer crossed the finish line at the Boston Marathon — but not before an official tried to drag her from the course.

See, at the time, only men competed in the race. Switzer signed her registration as “K.V. Switzer,” was accepted and, despite efforts to remove her from the 26.2 mile competition, became the first woman to finish it as an official entrant. Her bib number, 261, remains famous.

On Monday, Switzer, 70, revisited that rebellious, trail-blazing moment by crossing the finish line again. This time she didn’t have to dodge an angry course director, but was instead accompanied by 261 supporters who ran alongside her. Read more…

Angela Merkel’s powerful side-eye at Ivanka Trump is asking the question we’re all wondering

TwitterFacebook

Ivanka Trump gatecrashed Angela Merkel’s ill-fated summit with Donald Trump Friday, the latest in a line of questionable appearances at gatherings where she probably doesn’t really belong.

The reality TV star, businesswoman and jewelry vendor had a seat next to the German chancellor, who has a Ph.D. in chemistry and speaks fluent Russian, for the roundtable discussion with German and U.S. business leaders. Twitter was quick to spot a theme in the photos that emerged from the encounter.

In some of them, it looks a lot like Merkel is chucking serious side-eye at Trump’s daughter and wondering inside just what she’s doing there. Read more…

During a time of impassioned protests, controversial policies, and steadfast political resistance, the people of Trump’s America and those standing in solidarity across the globe are coming together in unique ways to make a difference.

The stark change in political tides has reignited an otherwise subdued form of communication amongst the many scrambling to organize, and fighting to stay informed: the sharing of Google Docs.

Though the simple word processing tool—which allows users to easily create, edit and share documents online—has been used since 2010 for everything from students compiling group projects to scientists cataloguing what animals fart, the personal, direct platform for collaboration has become a perfect way for likeminded individuals to connect about political issues across the country.
