Official Trailer for ‘McLaren’ Doc About Racing Legend Bruce McLaren

McLaren Documentary Trailer

“They were Kiwis taking on the world.” FilmBuff has revealed the trailer for a racing documentary titled McLaren, telling the story of Bruce McLaren, the New Zealander who started the McLaren Motor Racing team. You may recognize the name, especially if you love cars, as Bruce McLaren is the father & founder of McLaren Automotive, which manufactures some of the fastest cars on the planet. McLaren died at age 32 in 1970 when his car crashed while racing in England. Despite this tragic early death, he left quite a legacy, and achieved a great amount of success. “A man who showed the world that a man of humble beginnings could take on the elite of motor racing and win.” There have been some excellent racing movies recently (Senna and Rush come to mind) and this looks like it’s another that will appeal to all audiences, not just racing fans. ›››

“When There Is Nowhere to Go, Nowhere is Home.” Amazon Studios and Participant Media have released an official trailer for Human Flow, a new film directed by iconic Chinese artist/filmmaker Ai Weiwei. This will be premiering at the Venice Film Festival first before hitting theaters in October. This eye-opening, breathtaking, heart-wrenching documentary looks at the humanitarian crisis of our time. “Over 65 million people around the world have been forced from their homes to escape famine, climate change and war in the greatest human displacement since World War II.” Human Flow is made up of remarkable footage showing this mass migration and how people move around this planet. This looks incredible, I’m very excited to see the footage and experience it as presented by Ai Weiwei. I’m sure it’s going to be an emotional experience. ›››

Official Trailer for Prison Escape Thriller ‘Maze’ Set in Northern Ireland

Maze Movie Trailer

“It was supposed to be the most secure prison in Europe. It wasn’t supposed to have a flaw.” Lionsgate UK has debuted the first official trailer for an action thriller titled Maze, telling the true story of how 38 IRA prisoners escaped from HMP Maze high-security prison in Northern Ireland in 1983. The full cast includes Tom Vaughan-Lawlor, Martin McCann, Barry Ward, Eileen Walsh, and Aaron Monaghan. This premiered at the Galway Film Fleadh in July, and will be released in UK cinemas in September, but there’s still no US release date yet. I don’t know much about the history of this story, but I am intrigued to find out how they escaped. The main guy kind of reminds me of Ralph Fiennes. This is worth a look, might be good. ›››

Beautiful Official Trailer for Sean Baker’s Excellent ‘The Florida Project’

The Florida Project Trailer

“Thank you very much!” “You’re not welcome!” A24 has debuted the first official trailer for the outstanding indie film The Florida Project, the latest feature from Tangerine director Sean Baker. This premiered at the Cannes Film Festival this year to rave reviews – read mine here. The film tells the story of Halley, played by Bria Vinaite, and her daughter Moonee, played by Brooklynn Prince. They live at The Magic Castle, a motel in Orlando just in the backyard of Disneyland. Moonee and her friends run around causing all kinds of trouble and it’s such a delight to watch them. Willem Dafoe also stars in one of his best performances of his career, and I really mean that. This film is really something special, and you can see why with this trailer – which captures the magic and charm of this beautiful film just perfectly. One of the year’s best indie gems. ›››

Official Trailer for the Anticipated Bollywood Musical ‘Secret Superstar’

Secret Superstar Trailer

“Mom, I want the world to hear my voice!” Up for another singing competition movie? Bollywood is ready to launch a guaranteed hit with the movie Secret Superstar, about a 14-year-old girl from Baroda who dreams of being a singer. It’s not often we feature trailers for Bollywood movies, but I thought we’d make an exception for this one, especially considering it opens the same day in India as it does in the US later this October. Zaira Wasim stars as Insiya, with Meher Vij, Raj Arjun, Tirth Sharma, Kabir Sheikh, Farrukh Jaffer, and Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan. This actually looks fun, but it’s still another one of these singer-must-overcome-her-family stories we’ve seen many times before. English subtitles included. ›››

Official Trailer for Award Winning Documentary on Police – ‘The Force’

The Force Trailer

“I don’t want bad cops here, period.” Kino Lorber has revealed the first official trailer for the documentary titled The Force, examining the police crisis in America at the moment. The film actually focuses on the police themselves, going inside an “embattled urban police department struggling to rebuild trust in one of America’s most violent yet promising cities.” The police they’re profiling is the Oakland Police Department, and the storyline in the doc follows three different threads – one about the young police chief, another about new recruits in the Academy, and another about officers in the field facing increased hostility. The Force won Best Director at the Sundance Film Festival, and won Best Bay Area Documentary at the San Francisco Film Festival. This is an excellent trailer for a doc, really pulls you in and makes you feel for what’s at stake. ›››

Official Trailer for Eliza Hittman’s Drama ‘Beach Rats’ Set in Brooklyn

Beach Rats Trailer

“I don’t really know what I like…” Neon has unveiled the official full-length trailer for indie drama Beach Rats, the second feature from filmmaker Eliza Hittman, following up her debut It Felt Like Love. This originally premiered at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival in January, where it won the Best Director award. Newcomer Harris Dickinson plays Frankie, an aimless youth on the outer edges of Brooklyn, struggling to escape his bleak home life. He spends his summer balancing time between his delinquent group of friends, a potential new girlfriend, and older men he meets online. The cast includes Nicole Flyus, Frank Hakaj, Kate Hodge and Neal Huff. Despite some good reviews, this looks like pretentious art house drivel to me. ›››

See Gary Oldman as Winston Churchill in Official ‘Darkest Hour’ Trailer

Darkest Hour Trailer

“You cannot reason with a tiger when your head is in its mouth!” Focus Features has unveiled the first trailer for Joe Wright’s Darkest Hour, the second film this year about Winston Churchill (the other one is called Churchill starring Brian Cox). This is the film that stars the very talented Gary Oldman under heavy prosthetic as Winston Churchill, giving a powerful, commanding cigar-chomping performance. The focus in this film is on Churchill’s first few days as Prime Minister, deciding whether or not to agree to a peace treaty with Nazi Germany or fight back and rally the troops. The cast includes Lily James, Ben Mendelsohn, Stephen Dillane, Kristin Scott Thomas, Charley Palmer Rothwell, Ronald Pickup, Nicholas Jones, Hannah Steele, Richard Lumsden, and Jeremy Child. This looks much, much better than the other Churchill film. And hopefully this will get Oldman an Oscar nomination – it definitely seems possible. ›››
