Meet the New Kids – First Teaser Trailer for ‘X-Men: The New Mutants’

X-Men: The New Mutants

“Do you know what mutants are?” 20th Century Fox has unveiled the first teaser trailer for the new X-Men movie, this one title New Mutants, based on the spin-off comic series about a group of young mutants. Instead of continuing on with the X-Men superheroes we all know from the series of movies, Fox is trying something a bit different with a new group – starring Maisie Williams as Wolfsbane, Anya Taylor-Joy as Magik, Charlie Heaton as Cannonball, Henry Zaga as Sunspot, and Blu Hunt as Mirage. Also starring Alice Braga and Happy Anderson. So far this looks very horrific, yet still seemingly aimed at younger audiences, with the director of The Fault in Our Stars at the helm. This is our very first look, it’s worth a watch. Not at all what you’re expecting, way more of a horror than an X-Men movie, but it looks intriguing. ›››

The New Mutants teaser trailer is here!

20th Century Fox has released the first New Mutants teaser trailer! Watch the teaser below and let us know your thoughts in the comments.

It looks like Fox is taking the superhero movies into the horror genre, much like they did with the comedy genre (Deadpool) and also with the Western genre (Logan). Director Josh Boone (The Fault in Our Stars) previously stated The New Mutants will be “a full-fledged horror movie set within the X-Men universe,” while Fox’s Stacey Snider has described the film as “a haunted-house movie.”

The cast for the April 13, 2018 release includes Anya Taylor-Joy (SplitThe Witch) as Magik, Maisie Williams (Game of ThronesDoctor Who) as Wolfsbane, Charlie Heaton (Stranger ThingsShut In) as Cannonball, with newcomer Blu Hunt (The Originals) as Danielle Moonstar, Henry Zaga (13 Reasons Why) as Sunspot, and Alice Braga (Queen of the SouthPredatorsI Am Legend) as Dr. Cecilia Reyes. The shape-shifting alien Warlock will also appear as a CGI creation.

The New Mutants adapts the monthly comic book series of the same name that launched in 1982. Created by Chris Claremont and Bob McLeod, The New Mutants follows a group of teenage mutants as heroes in training in the Marvel Universe.

Fox Confirms 2018 Dates for ‘Deadpool 2’, ‘X-Men’ and ‘New Mutants’, Shuffles ‘The Predator’, ‘Maze Runner’ & More

Deadpool 2 Release Date

This morning 20th Century Fox caught everyone off guard by announcing new release dates for all four of the developing Avatar sequels that will start shooting this summer. But that wasn’t the only release date news the studio had to offer.

Fox has also confirmed the release dates for all of their Marvel movies in 2018, which includes X-Men: Dark Phoenix, Deadpool 2 and New Mutants. In addition, they’ve also shuffled the dates for The Predator, the delayed Maze Runner: The Death Cure, the remake of Murder on the Orient Express, and the spy thriller Red Sparrow. Plus, they’ve also given a release date to Steven Spielberg‘s next movie.

Get all the updated 20th Century Fox release dates after the jump.

First up, the Deadpool 2 release date is much more prime real estate than its predecessor’s February debut last year. This time the Merc with a Mouth will hit theaters on June 1, 2018. However, it won’t be the first Marvel movie from Fox that year, because they’ve set New Mutants for a debut on April 13, 2018. Then the X-Men line-up will conclude the year with X-Men: Dark Phoenix on November 2, 2018.

Meanwhile, there’s good and bad news for fans eagerly awaiting The Predator from director Shane Black. The bad news is Fox has pushed back that movie from its February 2018 release date all the way back to August 3, 2018. The good news is that’s actually a vote of confidence in the movie. They’re putting it in that first August weekend, which is where the first Guardians of the Galaxy cleaned up at the box office since there’s usually not much competition in the rest of the month. That means they think it’ll be a solid summer release, but they don’t want it to contend with the rest of the blockbuster madness that summer.

Moving into The Predator‘s evacuated February 9, 2018 release date will be Maze Runner: The Death Cure, which had previously been set to come out the month before. The film’s production was delayed when star Dylan O’Brien was injured in a stunt gone wrong. The film was meant to resume production early this year, so either they’ve already started or they will soon and they’ll have the rest of the year for post-production after that.

In addition, the spy thriller Red Sparrow starring Jennifer Lawrence is going to take the actress back to The Hunger Games box office territory by moving from its initial November 2017 release date back a few months to March 2, 2018. The film got some solid buzz when the trailer played at CinemaCon not too long ago, and it should be a solid spring release for the studio.

Taking Red Sparrow‘s old November 10, 2017 release date will be the remake of Murder on the Orient Express, starring Kenneth Branagh (who also directs), Daisy Ridley, Penelope Cruz, Willem Dafoe, Judi Dench, Johnny Depp, Josh Gad, Leslie Odom Jr., Michelle Pfeiffer, Lucy Boynton and more. It could be one that goes for some awards, especially in the acting department.

Also looking for some awards love will be the new film from Steven Spielberg. The press release from 20th Century Fox lists the film as untitled, but it’s presumably the film known as The Post that we learned about just last month., since that’s the only movie the director has set up at Fox. The film will see Spielberg directing Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep in a story about The Washington Post‘s showdown with the United States government over the “Pentagon Papers,” a classified military document that was leaked to the press by military analyst Daniel Ellsberg.

Finally, for those who are itching for the sequel to Kingsman: The Golden Circle, it’s been bumped up just a tad to September 22, 2018, a week before it was supposed to hit theaters. We’re still waiting on a new trailer to hit the web, but it’s on the way, so stay tuned for that and updates on all these films from 20th Century Fox.

Which one of these movies are you looking forward to the most?

New Mutants, Deadpool 2, and X-Men: Dark Phoenix Release Dates Revealed

New Mutants, Deadpool 2, and X-Men: Dark Phoenix Release Dates Revealed

New Mutants, Deadpool 2, and X-Men: Dark Phoenix release dates revealed

Following their reveal that the next four Avatar movies are set to arrive starting in 2020, 20th Century Fox has revealed three more release dates for some of their fan favorite properties. The first is the long awaited New Mutants movie which will debut April 13, 2018, following by the highly anticipated Deadpool 2 on June 1, 2018, and X-Men: Dark Phoenix on November 2, 2018.

In addition, the studio has announced Shane Black’s The Predator has been delayed from its February 9, 2018 release date to August 3, 2018.

New Mutants hails from director Josh Boone with a cast set to include Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones) as Wolfsbane, Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch) as Magik, Nat Wolff as Cannonball, and James McAvoy as Professor Charles Xavier. The film is set to open against one of Universal’s rebooted monster movies.

Deadpool 2 will once again star Ryan Reynolds as the merc with a mouth alongside Josh Brolin as Cable and Zazie Beetz as Domino. John Wick‘s David Leitch is directing Deadpool 2 from a screenplay by the returning “real heroes here,” screenwriters Reese and Paul Wernick. Reynolds is again serving as a producer on Deadpool 2 alongside X-Men franchise caretakers Simon Kinberg and Lauren Shuler Donner. Currently no other film is scheduled for June 1, 2018.

Details are lite on X-Men: Dark Phoenix, whose title isn’t explicitly confirmed either, but it was previously reported that Simon Kinberg would write and direct the film. Disney’s Mulan remake is scheduled to arrive on the film’s November 2 release date as well.

Shane Black directs the new Predator movie from a script with his Monster Squad co-writer Fred Dekker. The cast includes Boyd Holbrook, Olivia Munn, Trevante Rhodes, Keegan-Michael Key, Thomas Jane, Jacob Tremblay, Yvonne Strahovski, Alfie Allen , Sterling K. Brown and Edward James Olmos. Two other movies are set for the August 3, 2018 release date including an untitled live-action Disney movie and Sony’s Holmes and Watson.

Simon Kinberg Confirms ‘Deadpool 2’ and ‘New Mutants’ Targeting 2018 Release Dates

Deadpool 2 Release Date

This year, 20th Century Fox has three films set within the X-Men film universe heading into production. There’s the highly anticipated Deadpool 2 following up last year’s runaway R-rated hit, the X-Men spin-off The New Mutants from The Fault in Our Stars director Josh Boone, and the next installment of the primary mutant franchise, reportedly titled X-Men: Supernova, and likely directed by Simon Kinberg, who is also producing all of them.

Since Simon Kinberg is the common thread between all of these films, it should come as no surprise that he’s in the know regarding the development of each them. The producer is currently making the rounds promoting Logan (which he also produced), he’s been fielding a lot of questions about the future of the X-Men universe. Though he wasn’t able to give any major details away, he did confirm that 20th Century Fox is aiming to have both The New Mutants and Deadpool 2 in theaters in 2018.

Speaking with Collider, Simon Kinberg first addressed the development of The New Mutants:

“New Mutants we’re waiting on a new draft of the script, which we’re all very excited about. Josh Boone has been prepping that movie. Josh is someone who is a lifelong, hardcore fan of New Mutants, and the plan is to make that movie late spring, early summer of this year, and have it come out next year.”

That lines up with what we’ve been hearing since May of last year. While no specific date has been pegged, rumors have said April is when New Mutants will start shooting. But if they’re still waiting on a new draft of the script, it might not be that soon. Even so, Josh Boone has been teasing the film plenty over the past year, including an apparent confirmation of Maisie Williams playing the mutant Wolfsbane in the movie recently. Hopefully 20th Century Fox will have an official statement on that film soon.

What about Deadpool 2? Kinberg’s update on that front wasn’t much different:

“Similarly with Deadpool 2, Ryan and the guys have been working hard on the script. We have a really good script for that movie, and we’re into the casting process right now for some of the new characters. There aren’t a lot of new characters, but there are some big ones, as I’m sure you can imagine. And the plan would be to shoot that movie this year as well and have it come out next year. So potentially next year you will have a surfeit of X-Men and X-Men-related movies in theaters.”

Let’s not forget that X-Men: Supernova (as it’s rumored to be called) is supposed to shoot later this year as well. That means we’re looking at having three Marvel movies hit theaters from 20th Century Fox next year. The question is, when will they arrive?

Right now, 20th Century Fox has March 2, 2018 staked out in the spring, June 29, 2018 in the summer and November 2, 2018 for the fall. If I had to bet, the Deadpool 2 release date will be in March, The New Mutants will debut during the summer and the primary X-Men sequel will arrive in November. With all those movies arriving next year, will we start seeing even more connectivity between them? Kinberg had an answer for that too:

“There’s a long-term plan for what to do with each of these movies, and how these movies could potentially interact or come together in the future. And yet, within each of these films, there’s the freedom for the filmmaker to make whatever movie they want to make.”

Fun Fact: Deadpool actually made his comic book debut in an issue of The New Mutants. I’m not sure if Deadpool 2 and The New Mutants movie will have any connective tissue paying tribute to their history, but we’ll find out next year.

‘New Mutants’ Will Bring Back James McAvoy’s Professor X

James McAvoy as Professor X in X-Men

Despite the fact that New Mutants is supposed to start shooting within the next few months, there’s still not a whole lot we know about it. No casting has been officially announced (though there are plenty of rumors swirling about), and while an animatic unveiled Demon Bear as the big villain, plot details remain pretty scarce otherwise. But today someone let slip that James McAvoy will be returning as Professor X, the role he’s inhabited since 2011’s X-Men: First Class

McAvoy is currently starring in M. Night Shyamalan’s Split with Anya Taylor-Joy, who’s one of the young stars rumored for New Mutants. Coming Soon sat down with Taylor-Joy for a recent interview during the Split press tour. Since Fox has not publicly confirmed her casting, Taylor-Joy is being careful not to say too much about the role she may or may not (but probably does) have:

I have [seen the Demon Bear animatic], it’s pretty cool. I’m a big fan so I’d love to be a part of it. I can’t say very much, but I would love to be a part of it. I think this year’s gonna be very exciting.

She was more forthcoming, however, about McAvoy’s involvement in New Mutants. “I mean, I think James is already a part of it, isn’t he?” she said when asked if she might reunite with her Split co-star.

We have known for some time that Charles Xavier would pop up in New Mutants. Back in May, producer Simon Kinberg stated, “Right now, as the movie exists, Professor X would be a part of a New Mutants movie.” However, he did not clarify at the time whether Professor X would be played by McAvoy, Patrick Stewart, or some other actor to be revealed later. And with First Class stars Michael Fassbender and Jennifer Lawrence likely done with the X-Men franchise, it seemed possible McAvoy would be on his way out as well. So while it’s not exactly surprising that McAvoy will indeed return as Professor X, it’s still nice to get confirmation.

As revealed by BooneNew Mutants will focus on the traditional lineup of Mirage, Magik, Cannonball, Sunspot, and Wolfsbane. Taylor-Joy is reportedly being eyed for Magik, and Game of Thrones‘ Maisie Williams is said to be up for Wolfsbane. Paper Towns‘ Nat Wolff is rumored to be in the running for Cannonball. There was also a story going around that Alexandra Shipp might reprise her X-Men: Apocalypse role as Storm, but that part has yet to be confirmed.

New Mutants is aiming to shoot in spring 2017 for release sometime in 2018.
