Watch: How Michael Haneke Masters the Art of the Very Long Take

Here’s why button-pushing Austrian filmmaker Michael Haneke chooses not to cut.

Starting his career in 1970s German television, Micahel Haneke has made 16 films since 1989. In the U.S., he first became more well known for Funny Games, an English remake of his own film, with action moved from Austria. He rose to further acclaim here in 2012 with Amour, which was nominated for two Academy Awards. The quality common to all his work, according to an essay on the director from n+1, is that his films are “’taxonomic’: [Haneke’s films] examine the possibilities of contemporary (haute) bourgeois life and consistently shows its protagonists to be at best trapped and ineffectual and at worst, much worse.”

“In a film, you’re constantly manipulating everything, but at least you can eliminate this kind of manipulation.”

By the Power of Grayskull! Masters of the Universe Movie Sets 2019 Release

The Masters of the Universe movie has a release date. Look for the Masters of the Universe movie to arrive December 18, 2019.

Sony Pictures has set new release dates for Angry Birds 2 and the Masters of the Universe movie

Sony Pictures has today updated its release calendar, adding two major releases to the schedule. Look for the animated sequel Angry Birds 2 to arrive September 20, 2019 with McG’s Masters of the Universe movie following on December 18, 2019. The still untitled animated Spider-Man movie sees a slight shift, too, moving one week earlier to December 14, 2018.

Masters of the Universe follows Prince Adam, who has the ability to transform into a warrior called He-Man. As He-Man, Adam becomes the last hope for a magical land called Eternia, ravaged by technology and the evil Skeletor.

McG, who is directing the Masters of the Universe movie, recently spoke with CS about his plans for the fantastic world of He-Man.

Originally launched as a popular Mattel toy line in 1982, “Masters of the Universe” spawned several animated series (including the female-driven spinoff cartoon series, “She-Ra: Princess of Power”) along with a 1987 live-action film. Directed by Gary Goddard, the first Masters of the Universe movie stars Dolph Lundgren as He-Man, Frank Langella as Skeletor and, in one of her very first big screen roles, a young Courteney Cox as Julie Winston, a teenage character created specifically for the film.

“I think we want to honor the fan base, first and foremost,” he said. “We also need to be cognizant of the incredible resonance of what Kevin Feige is doing with Marvel, and the balance of full-bodied entertainment. That it’s both credible and emotional, action-packed, and the story of a hero’s journey. It’s the genesis of He-Man, it’s the becoming of He-Man. We want it to be clicking on all cylinders in that regard. We’re not going to stop until we get it right.”

The December 18, 2019 release date will see the Masters of the Universe movie opening just two days before both Universal Pictures’ Broadway adaptation Wicked and a mystery live action Walt Disney Pictures fairy tale film. Angry Birds 2, meanwhile, is the first film to claim that date. The animated Spider-Man, then, is now set to face off against Universal’s Mortal Engines.

Why is the world’s best golfer missing the Masters? A very serious investigation.

TwitterFacebook

The Masters golf tournament was rocked on its opening day Thursday when Dustin Johnson — the world’s top-ranked golfer — was forced to pull out of the competition.

Here’s where it gets weird: Johnson injured his back falling down a small staircase in the house he was renting near August National Golf Club. (Don’t worry — Johnson’s not mortally wounded or anything. He took some practice swings Thursday before deciding his back was too “tight” to compete.)

Now, we don’t yet know exactly how or why Johnson fell down those stairs.  Read more…

Watch: ‘Arrival’ Masters the Art of Subtle VFX

Sci-fi requires special effects, but ‘Arrival’ treats them with more restraint than you might expect.

When we spoke to Bradford Young, the DP of Arrival, earlier this year, he revealed how he and director Denis Villeneuve worked to unshackle themselves from the conventions of science fiction to create a more delicate—even mundane—visual approach. This subtlety permeated the entire production, including visual effects—an atypical choice for contemporary alien movies.

Oblique FX, which created this video showcasing some of their work on the film’s effects, also worked on Denis Villeneuve’s last film, the Oscar-nominated Sicario, in 2015. Under the supervision of Louis Morin, other effects houses on this project included Hybride, Rodeo FX, Framestore, Raynault VFX, Folks FX and Alchemy FX. You might never suspect the VFX army behind the film when you witness its seemingly organic visuals.
