Getting fired is no fun, but for former Han Solo movie directors Chris Miller and Phil Lord, the glass is half full.
The pair were unceremoniously removed from Solo: A Star Wars Story in June, three weeks before filming was due to be finished. A statement at the time cited “creative differences” as the reason for their departure.
Miller and Lord discussed the exit at the Vulture Festival in Los Angeles on Sunday, during a panel for their MTV series Clone High.
Lord generously described the experience of shooting the film as “wonderful,” and both were rather kind-hearted about the unfortunate turn of events. Read more…

Amazon’s original series will explore storylines preceding Tolkien’s ‘The Fellowship of the Ring’ as part of an estimated $ 250 million deal.
Today, Amazon announced that it has acquired the global television rights to The Lord of the Rings to create an original, multi-season series that will debut exclusively on Amazon Prime Video. Working with the Tolkien Estate and Trust, HarperCollins and New Line Cinema, a division of Warner Bros. Entertainment, Amazon Studios will produce a series that will explore storylines that precede Tolkien’s The Fellowship of the Ring, taking fans on a new journey through Middle Earth.
According to Deadline, the Tolkien estate had approached Amazon, Netflix and HBO about the project with an upfront fee of $ 200-$ 250 million, with sources claiming that Amazon secured the deal with an agreement close to the $ 250 million mark. That $ 250 million is only for the rights. Amazon will still need to pony up to pay for production, which could likely cost between $ 100-$ 150 million per season.

What a crazy few weeks it has been for Hollywood. As we all know, directors Phil Lord & Chris Miller were shockingly fired from Disney’s still-untitled Han Solo project a few weeks ago. It was shocking because they were already several months into filming the new Star Wars Story movie, with only a couple of weeks remaining. Lucasfilm eventually announced that Ron Howard had been hired to replace them. Lord & Miller aren’t the first directors to not work well within the studio system as of late. Jon Favreau, Edward Norton, Patty Jenkins and Edgar Wright have all faced similar problems in recent years. So, are auteur filmmakers doomed? Let’s take a look at why studios like Disney & Marvel still need auteur filmmakers. ›››

Whoa! Major news to report. Directors Phil Lord & Christopher Miller will no longer be directing the Han Solo spin-off Star Wars movie, currently in the middle of filming. Lucasfilm and Lord/Miller have both released statements, via Hollywood Reporter, confirming the shocking news and admitting to “creative differences” as the reason. The project was already most of the way through filming, apparently with only a few weeks left, yet they’re not going to finish and will instead hand over the work to someone else (yet to be announced). This is a huge shake-up in Hollywood, and will be talked about for years. For now, the original May 25th, 2018 release date is still unchanged, with reshoots planned later this summer with a new director. ›››
