Watching Excellent Films on the Lido at My First Venice Film Festival

Venice Film Festival

My goodness, this is a beautiful place. I am currently in Venice attending the Venice Film Festival, aka Venezia 74, for my very first time. After nine years in a row attending the Telluride Film Festival, I decided to switch things up and head down to Venice. Honestly, the main reason is that I could not afford the cost of going to Telluride. Now that I live in Berlin, the total cost of flying back, staying in the city, and buying a badge was just too much. As crazy as it sounds, flying down to Venice and attending this festival is actually cheaper. Telluride and Venice both take place at the same time, and they both play many of the same films. But they take place on opposite sides of the world so I had to choose one or the other. But it doesn’t matter, you can watch great movies anywhere around the world and I’m lucky to be able to enjoy this lovely festival. ›››

Beautiful Official Trailer for Sean Baker’s Excellent ‘The Florida Project’

The Florida Project Trailer

“Thank you very much!” “You’re not welcome!” A24 has debuted the first official trailer for the outstanding indie film The Florida Project, the latest feature from Tangerine director Sean Baker. This premiered at the Cannes Film Festival this year to rave reviews – read mine here. The film tells the story of Halley, played by Bria Vinaite, and her daughter Moonee, played by Brooklynn Prince. They live at The Magic Castle, a motel in Orlando just in the backyard of Disneyland. Moonee and her friends run around causing all kinds of trouble and it’s such a delight to watch them. Willem Dafoe also stars in one of his best performances of his career, and I really mean that. This film is really something special, and you can see why with this trailer – which captures the magic and charm of this beautiful film just perfectly. One of the year’s best indie gems. ›››

Watch: Excellent Animated Short ‘Coke Habit’ About Soda Addiction

Coke Habit Short Film

“Sometimes it was 8 cans in a day. It was way, way too much.” Stop drinking soda! It’s very bad for your health. How many of you are addiction to pop/soda? In America, it’s a very common thing, as we all grow up drinking it and enjoy it so much that we can’t help but enjoy soda all the time. This animated short film, titled Coke Habit, tells the story of one man named Mike explaining how his addiction to soda became a major problem when he was in high school. This is indeed a very important health PSA, but it’s also a very creative and unique short film with some impressive animation. I love the color palette, and I love how it all flows. It’s short, sweet (no pun intended) and good work I want to share as filmmaking that impressed me. ›››

Berlinale 2017: Mangold’s ‘Logan’ is an Excellent Wolverine Western

Logan Review

Let’s make this clear right at the start – this is not another Marvel Studios movie. Logan is a stand-alone, outstanding, one-of-a-kind X-Men movie made for adults. It’s violent as all hell, emotional and captivating, gritty and grounded, and exciting to experience. Director James Mangold really hit a home run with this one, bucking the trend and going with his gut to deliver a superb “Wolverine Western”. I had to see Logan twice at the Berlin Film Festival before writing this review, to confirm how awesome it is. I haven’t enjoyed watching an X-Men movie this much in such a long time, and I’d say this is easily one of the best X-Men movies. It’s not really an X-Men movie, but it actually is – there’s so much mutant mythology hidden within. ›››
