Prolific American Actor Harry Dean Stanton Has Passed Away at 91

Harry Dean Stanton

Sad news to report about a very talented, beloved actor. Harry Dean Stanton has died at age 91 (report via The Guardian) at a hospital in Los Angeles. Stanton has a legendary, prolific actor who appeared in over 100 different roles throughout the years. Many may recognize him because he’s probably been in something you’ve seen, or a movie you love, there’s no question about it. Roger Ebert even created the “Stanton-Walsh Rule“, saying: “No movie featuring either Harry Dean Stanton or M. Emmet Walsh in a supporting role can be altogether bad.” Stanton most recently appeared on the new “Twin Peaks” show, playing Carl Rodd, and has a film out this year (titled Lucky). He also dabbled in writing and music, but ended up sticking to acting. ›››

Harry Dean Stanton in First Trailer for Spiritual Journey Film ‘Lucky’

Lucky Trailer

“I know the truth, and the truth matters. And you have to face that and accept it.” Magnolia Pictures has debuted an official trailer for a special indie comedy titled Lucky, starring Harry Dean Stanton as the character “Lucky”. As the official description explains, the film is not only a “love letter to the life and career of Harry Dean Stanton“, but also a “meditation on morality, loneliness, spirituality, and human connection” telling the story of a 90-year-old atheist. And it looks damn good. Co-starring Ron Livingston, Ed Begley Jr., Tom Skerritt, Beth Grant, as well as filmmaker David Lynch as “Howard”. I’m very curious to see this just to hear everything Harry Dean Stanton has to say, maybe there’s some valuable wisdom to pick up from someone who has lived this kind of long life. Besides that, it looks like it has some good laughs. Enjoy. ›››

Official Trailer for Demetri Martin’s Directorial Debut Comedy ‘Dean’

Dean Trailer

“First big thing in your life you’re never going to get over.” CBS Films has debuted a trailer for Demetri Martin’s feature directorial debut, an indie comedy titled Dean, about a young man trying to figure himself out after his mother passes away. Kevin Kline co-stars as his father, and the full cast includes Gillian Jacobs, Reid Scott, Meryl Hathaway, and Mary Steenburgen. This is described in the marketing as “a comedic and heartfelt tale about a father and son coming to terms with love, loss and everything in between.” I really like the music in this trailer, and the quirky hand-drawn title cards are a nice touch. I feel like this would be best seen at a film festival, but it only played at Tribeca last year. Still, looks pretty good. ›››
