All Four ‘Avatar’ Sequels Receive New Release Dates as Production Begins

It’s become a running joke by now: they set a date for Avatar 2 and then, after months (or years!) of nothing, it gets delayed. The sequel to the highest grossing film of all time was originally supposed to arrive in 2014…and then it was pushed back to 2016…and then it was pushed back to 2018. So when writer/director James Cameron revealed that the film wasn’t going to meet that last date, no one even blinked. Of course Avatar 2 wasn’t going to be released next year!

Because it’s going to be released in three years. Production has officially begun on the four sequels to the 2009 original, with the first movie now due out in 2020.

The news was revealed on the official Avatar Facebook page, where Cameron posed for a picture with his crew and announced the start of concurrent production on Avatar 2, Avatar 3, Avatar 4, and Avatar 5. There have been many conversations about whether or not audiences will care about this series by the time a new one arrives, but Cameron is a wily fellow – whether we want them or not, four more Avatar movies are coming and they’re filming at the same time.

Avatar 2 is due out on December 18, 2020 and Avatar 3 will follow a year later on December 17, 2021. After a three year gap, Avatar 4 will arrive on December 20, 2024 and Avatar 5 will wrap everything up on December 19, 2015. Here’s the official statement:

Great to be working with the best team in the business! Avatar takes flight as we begin concurrent production on four sequels. The journey continues December 18, 2020December 17, 2021December 20, 2024 and December 19, 2025!

This announcement arrives at a key moment for this franchise. Walt Disney World is set to open the Pandora: The World of Avatar next month and all eyes are on it, with pop culture enthusiasts and major corporations alike wondering if it will draw the same kind of attention as other recent theme park endeavors. In the unlikely event that tourists simply reject Pandora, Cameron will still have the last laugh – cameras have already started rolling.

And while one of the internet’s major pastimes involves everyone rolling their eyes at the original Avatar, you can’t ignore that $ 2.7 billion gross and you can’t ignore the fact that James Cameron has always been one step ahead of just about everyone else in Hollywood’s orbit. He’s always given the people what they want and he’s always proved his naysayers wrong. I’m the camp that enjoys Avatar but also can’t say I’m ecstatic about four sequels at the moment. However, I look forward to Cameron making me care. He’s pretty, pretty good at that.

Fox Confirms 2018 Dates for ‘Deadpool 2’, ‘X-Men’ and ‘New Mutants’, Shuffles ‘The Predator’, ‘Maze Runner’ & More

Deadpool 2 Release Date

This morning 20th Century Fox caught everyone off guard by announcing new release dates for all four of the developing Avatar sequels that will start shooting this summer. But that wasn’t the only release date news the studio had to offer.

Fox has also confirmed the release dates for all of their Marvel movies in 2018, which includes X-Men: Dark Phoenix, Deadpool 2 and New Mutants. In addition, they’ve also shuffled the dates for The Predator, the delayed Maze Runner: The Death Cure, the remake of Murder on the Orient Express, and the spy thriller Red Sparrow. Plus, they’ve also given a release date to Steven Spielberg‘s next movie.

Get all the updated 20th Century Fox release dates after the jump.

First up, the Deadpool 2 release date is much more prime real estate than its predecessor’s February debut last year. This time the Merc with a Mouth will hit theaters on June 1, 2018. However, it won’t be the first Marvel movie from Fox that year, because they’ve set New Mutants for a debut on April 13, 2018. Then the X-Men line-up will conclude the year with X-Men: Dark Phoenix on November 2, 2018.

Meanwhile, there’s good and bad news for fans eagerly awaiting The Predator from director Shane Black. The bad news is Fox has pushed back that movie from its February 2018 release date all the way back to August 3, 2018. The good news is that’s actually a vote of confidence in the movie. They’re putting it in that first August weekend, which is where the first Guardians of the Galaxy cleaned up at the box office since there’s usually not much competition in the rest of the month. That means they think it’ll be a solid summer release, but they don’t want it to contend with the rest of the blockbuster madness that summer.

Moving into The Predator‘s evacuated February 9, 2018 release date will be Maze Runner: The Death Cure, which had previously been set to come out the month before. The film’s production was delayed when star Dylan O’Brien was injured in a stunt gone wrong. The film was meant to resume production early this year, so either they’ve already started or they will soon and they’ll have the rest of the year for post-production after that.

In addition, the spy thriller Red Sparrow starring Jennifer Lawrence is going to take the actress back to The Hunger Games box office territory by moving from its initial November 2017 release date back a few months to March 2, 2018. The film got some solid buzz when the trailer played at CinemaCon not too long ago, and it should be a solid spring release for the studio.

Taking Red Sparrow‘s old November 10, 2017 release date will be the remake of Murder on the Orient Express, starring Kenneth Branagh (who also directs), Daisy Ridley, Penelope Cruz, Willem Dafoe, Judi Dench, Johnny Depp, Josh Gad, Leslie Odom Jr., Michelle Pfeiffer, Lucy Boynton and more. It could be one that goes for some awards, especially in the acting department.

Also looking for some awards love will be the new film from Steven Spielberg. The press release from 20th Century Fox lists the film as untitled, but it’s presumably the film known as The Post that we learned about just last month., since that’s the only movie the director has set up at Fox. The film will see Spielberg directing Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep in a story about The Washington Post‘s showdown with the United States government over the “Pentagon Papers,” a classified military document that was leaked to the press by military analyst Daniel Ellsberg.

Finally, for those who are itching for the sequel to Kingsman: The Golden Circle, it’s been bumped up just a tad to September 22, 2018, a week before it was supposed to hit theaters. We’re still waiting on a new trailer to hit the web, but it’s on the way, so stay tuned for that and updates on all these films from 20th Century Fox.

Which one of these movies are you looking forward to the most?

New Mutants, Deadpool 2, and X-Men: Dark Phoenix Release Dates Revealed

New Mutants, Deadpool 2, and X-Men: Dark Phoenix Release Dates Revealed

New Mutants, Deadpool 2, and X-Men: Dark Phoenix release dates revealed

Following their reveal that the next four Avatar movies are set to arrive starting in 2020, 20th Century Fox has revealed three more release dates for some of their fan favorite properties. The first is the long awaited New Mutants movie which will debut April 13, 2018, following by the highly anticipated Deadpool 2 on June 1, 2018, and X-Men: Dark Phoenix on November 2, 2018.

In addition, the studio has announced Shane Black’s The Predator has been delayed from its February 9, 2018 release date to August 3, 2018.

New Mutants hails from director Josh Boone with a cast set to include Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones) as Wolfsbane, Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch) as Magik, Nat Wolff as Cannonball, and James McAvoy as Professor Charles Xavier. The film is set to open against one of Universal’s rebooted monster movies.

Deadpool 2 will once again star Ryan Reynolds as the merc with a mouth alongside Josh Brolin as Cable and Zazie Beetz as Domino. John Wick‘s David Leitch is directing Deadpool 2 from a screenplay by the returning “real heroes here,” screenwriters Reese and Paul Wernick. Reynolds is again serving as a producer on Deadpool 2 alongside X-Men franchise caretakers Simon Kinberg and Lauren Shuler Donner. Currently no other film is scheduled for June 1, 2018.

Details are lite on X-Men: Dark Phoenix, whose title isn’t explicitly confirmed either, but it was previously reported that Simon Kinberg would write and direct the film. Disney’s Mulan remake is scheduled to arrive on the film’s November 2 release date as well.

Shane Black directs the new Predator movie from a script with his Monster Squad co-writer Fred Dekker. The cast includes Boyd Holbrook, Olivia Munn, Trevante Rhodes, Keegan-Michael Key, Thomas Jane, Jacob Tremblay, Yvonne Strahovski, Alfie Allen , Sterling K. Brown and Edward James Olmos. Two other movies are set for the August 3, 2018 release date including an untitled live-action Disney movie and Sony’s Holmes and Watson.

All Four Avatar Sequel Release Dates Confirmed!

All Four Avatar Sequel Release Dates Confirmed!

All four Avatar sequel release dates confirmed!

Since the first Avatar arrived in 2009 James Cameron has been hard at work on a follow-up which has grown from one sequel to two to three and now four movies, whose release dates have been in flux and delayed with frequency. Now, 20th Century Fox and Lightstorm Entertainment have announced the release dates for all four of the films via the official Avatar Facebook page along with a photo of James Cameron and his cast and crew!

“Great to be working with the best team in the business! Avatar takes flight as we begin concurrent production on four sequels. The journey continues December 18, 2020, December 17, 2021, December 20, 2024 and December 19, 2025!”

Cameron previously spoke about the undertaking of making all four sequels at the same time in an interview with The Star when it was revealed Avatar 2 wouldn’t arrive in 2018, saying:

“What people have to understand is that this is a cadence of releases. So we’re not making Avatar 2. We’re making Avatar 2, 3, 4 and 5. It’s an epic undertaking. It’s not unlike building the Three Gorges dam. (Laughs) So I know where I’m going to be for the next eight years of my life. It’s not an unreasonable time frame if you think about it. It took us four-and-a-half years to make one movie and now we’re making four. We’re full tilt boogie right now. This is my day job and pretty soon we’ll be 24-7. We’re pretty well designed on all our creatures and sets. It’s pretty exciting stuff. I wish I could share with the world. But we have to preserve a certain amount of showmanship and we’re going to draw that curtain when the time is right.”

Confirmed to feature the return of cast members Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang and Sigourney Weaver, the Avatar sequels will be produced by Cameron and Jon Landau through their Lightstorm Entertainment. The sequels are written by Cameron along with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, Josh Friedman, and Shane Salerno, which Cameron will direct.

Aladdin: Open Casting Call for Lead Roles and Production Dates Revealed

Aladdin: Open Casting Call For Lead Roles and Production Dates Released

Aladdin: Open casting call for lead roles and production dates revealed

The live-action version of the 1992 Disney animated film Aladdin will be directed by Guy Ritchie (Lock, Stock and Two Smoking BarrelsRock’n’rolla), and today a casting call went out for some of the leads. The call was posted on Twitter (confirmed by THR) and says that Disney is looking for an actor and actress to play the roles of Aladdin and Princess Jasminel. As you can see in the post below, they’ve made it clear that the characters are Middle Eastern. They’re looking for actors who are between the ages of 18 and 25 who must be able to sing, with dancing skills as a plus. The call is for rehearsals to begin in April of this year, with the film shooting in the U.K. from July 2017 to January 2018.

Scott Weinger (Fuller House) and Linda Larkin (Joshua) played the roles in the Disney film, as well as voicing the role for follow up films and video games. Take a look at the casting announcement below.

John August (Big Fish) has penned the script for the film, which will, this casting announcement confirms, keep the musical elements of the 1992 film. Aladdin joins a long list of live-action remakes by Disney of their classic animated films, including CinderellaThe Jungle BookPete’s Dragon, the upcoming Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, Mulan, Dumbo, and more. Aladdin was nominated for five Academy Awards and won two, including Best Original Score and Best Original Song for “A Whole New World.” The late Robin Williams played the Genie in the film.
