LFF Review: Brazilian Film ‘Good Manners’ is a Clever Horror Creation

Good Manners

This Brazilian horror drama film falls under the category of WTF?!, but it’s so so so good. Good Manners, or As Boas Maneiras in Portuguese, is a film from Brazil set in São Paulo that is unlike anything I’ve ever seen before. If I am to sum it up in one sentence it would be: a Brazilian, lesbian, musical, werewolf drama. It’s kind of a horror film, but not really, much more of a drama with some horrific elements. Good Manners is the most clever, refreshing reinvention of the werewolf film in years. It will make you freak out and laugh and cover your eyes and throw your hands up aghast in bewilderment. The less you know about it going in, the more enjoyable the experience will be when you finally watch it unfold. So be careful with what you read. ›››

‘Annabelle: Creation’ Trailer: The Possessed Doll Haunts a Group of Orphan Girls

Annabelle Creation Trailer

Because everything needs to be explained to death nowadays, we’re getting Annabelle: Creation, the origin story of the possessed doll that made its debut in The Conjuring before getting its own spin-off in 2014.

Continuing to expand the mythology of the supernatural, paranormal activity investigated by Lorraine (Vera Farmiga) and Ed (Patrick Wilson) Warren, Annabelle: Creation shows us how this creepy doll came to be possessed by some kind of evil spirit, tricking a couple grief stricken by the loss of their daughter to transfer a demon into the old fashioned toy. In an attempt to pay for their mistake, they shelter a group of orphan girls, one of who becomes the next target for Annabelle.

Watch the new Annabelle Creation trailer after the jump.

As someone who enjoyed The Conjuring quite a bit, as well as The Conjuring 2, it was supremely disappointing to sit through the first Annabelle. It was full of jump scares and the doll itself can only be so creepy before it becomes boring. It feels like the least creative part of the world of Ed and Lorraine Warren so far, and finding out where the doll came from seems even less interesting.

Sadly, the horror side of this origin story doesn’t look like it’s offering much either. There are some ridiculous jump scares in the trailer, and while that’s usually what horror trailers try to do, I’m betting the movie is full of cheap thrills like that as well. At the very least, this movie has the talented Lulu Wilson, who helped make Ouija: Origin of Evil a compelling prequel story, so maybe she can help elevate the material here as well.

Annabelle: Creation is written by Gary Dauberman, who also wrote Annabelle, and directed by Lights Out helmer David F. Sandberg. The film stars Stephanie Sigman (Spectre), Talitha Bateman (The 5th Wave), Lulu Wilson (Ouija: Origin of Evil), Philippa Coulthard (After the Dark), Grace Fulton (Badland), Lou Lou Safran (The Choice), Samara Lee (Foxcatcher) and Tayler Buck, with Anthony LaPaglia (Without a Trace) and Miranda Otto (The Lord of the Rings Trilogy).

If you want to see more from Annabelle: Creation, you can watch the first trailer right here.

Several years after the tragic death of their little girl, a dollmaker and his wife welcome a nun and several girls from a shuttered orphanage into their home, soon becoming the target of the dollmaker’s possessed creation, Annabelle.

Annabelle: Creation hits theaters late this summer on August 11.

‘Batman and Bill’ Trailer: The Truth About the Creation of Batman Explained in a New Documentary

Batman and Bill Trailer

Everyone thinks Bob Kane is the sole creator of Batman. What the new documentary Batman and Bill presupposes is, maybe he’s not.

Even though Bob Kane is frequently and historically associated with the creation of Batman, the more educated comic book fans now know that many of the signature elements of Batman’s long comic book history were created by another man named Bill Finger. But why is his name not nearly as synonymous with the creation of The Dark Knight? A new documentary explores why Finger was omitted from Batman’s history and only just recently started getting the credit that he’s due.

Watch the Batman and Bill trailer below.

As the trailer explains, though Bob Kane had the initial idea to create a superhero who was quite the opposite of DC Comics’ Big Blue Boy Scout known as Superman, all of the signature traits of Batman’s comic book adventures came from Bill Finger. Not only did Finger create Batman’s trademark design and draw his stories, he was responsible for creating some key pieces of The Caped Crusader’s mythology. Robin, The Joker, The Penguin, The Riddler, Scarecrow, Commissioner Gordon, Gotham City and much more were all added into Batman’s universe by Bill Finger.

Thankfully, since 2015, Bill Finger has started receiving prominent credit for his pivotal contributions to the creation of Batman, even appearing in the credits for Gotham and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and presumably anything associated with Batman from here on out.

But how does a man who is so integral to the creation of one of the most revered superheroes of all time get shoved to the side and almost forgotten by comic book history? That’s the story that Batman and Bill is setting out to tell, inspired by author Marc Tyler Nobleman‘s endeavor to make sure Bill Finger got credit for his work, which he chronicled in the book Bill The Boy Wonder: The Secret Co-Creator of Batman.

In addition to Nobleman, plenty of comic book historians, artists, Batman experts (like comic writer and filmmaker Kevin Smith) and more appear in the documentary to talk about this tragic tale of ignorance in the creation of Batman that went on for far too long.

Everyone thinks that Bob Kane created Batman, but that’s not the whole truth. One author makes it his crusade to seek justice for Bill Finger, a struggling writer who was the key figure in creating the iconic superhero, from concept to costume to the very character we all know and love. Bruce Wayne may be Batman’s secret identity, but his creator was always a true mystery.

Batman and Bill will be available to watch on Hulu on May 6.
