The Joker Origin Movie in the Works at Warner Bros. and DC

The Joker Origin Movie in the Works at Warner Bros. and DC

The Joker origin movie in the works at Warner Bros. and DC

Warner Bros. Pictures and DC are in the early stages of developing at Joker origin movie, according to Deadline. The site says that The Hangover‘s Todd Phillips will co-write the script with 8 Mile‘s Scott Silver. Phillips will direct the movie, to be produced by Martin Scorsese and Phillips.

The Joker origin movie will be the first film under a new banner that Warner Bros. has yet to name, but which will expand the canon of DC Comics properties and create unique storylines with different actors playing the characters.

The Joker has previously been played by Jack Nicholson in Batman, by Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight, and by Jared Leto in Suicide Squad. The site adds that Leto will reprise the character in the Suicide Squad sequel and the Harley Quinn spinoff, Gotham City Sirens. This new film, however, will feature a different actor, possibly younger.

Also of note is the setting. Deadline claims that “the intention is to make a gritty and grounded hard-boiled crime film set in early-’80s Gotham City that isn’t meant to feel like a DC movie as much as one of Scorsese’s films from that era, like Taxi Driver, Raging Bull or The King Of Comedy.”

While it’s unknown when this Joker origin movie would be released, Phillips and Silver are already writing the script.

The Matrix Reboot May be Happening at Warner Bros.

The Matrix Reboot is Happening at Warner Bros. What do you think about a Matrix reboot?

The Matrix reboot may be happening at Warner Bros.

Yet another reboot is in the works, according to THR. This time around it’s The Matrix. Sources tell the site that Warner Bros. has a reboot of the sci-fi film in the works, with Zack Penn (Ready Player OneX-Men: The Last Stand) in talks to write the script. The studio is reportedly looking at Michael B. Jordan (CreedFantastic Four) to star, but it’s early days yet. The original film came to us from The Wachowskis and is considered one of the great sci-fi films of all time. It was known for its groundbreaking effects that have been endlessly copied over the years. At this time, the Wachowskis are not involved with the project.

The film was released back in 1999 and gave us an effect known as “bullet time,” the slow-moving action that showed bullets slowly moving during the heightened perception of the main character. The term was used in the script for the first film and is now trademarked by Warner Bros. The Matrix is the story of Neo, played by Keanu Reeves (John WickSpeed), a hacker who is brought into the “real” world, learning that what we perceive as reality is actually a computer program. The Matrix also starred Laurence Fishburne (Mystic RiverBatman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Carrie-Ann Moss (Jessica JonesMemento).

There were two sequels for The MatrixThe Matrix Reloaded in 2003 and The Matrix Revolutions released six months after the first sequel. The Animatrix was an animated anthology based on the film series and was also released in 2003. There have been numerous video games, anime and comics in the franchise that have continued the story.

Now, it’s very likely that you have strong feelings about a Matrix reboot. We want to hear them! Sound off in the comments or tweet us @ComingSoonnet.

Whoa: ‘The Matrix’ Reboot Taking Shape at Warner Bros. Without the Wachowskis

The Matrix Reboot

Almost nothing is safe from being rebooted, and the latest news from Warner Bros. Pictures only confirms that.

The Matrix was a gamechanging sci-fi action movie for a number of reasons, from the introduction of slow-motion bullet time action sequences to an original mind-blowing narrative that audiences became obsessed with to the point that two back-to-back sequels were released four years later, six months apart from each other. Now The Matrix is in the early stages of getting some kind of reboot, revival, relaunch or whatever you want to call it.

Find out more about The Matrix reboot after the jump.

The Hollywood Reporter has news of The Matrix reboot being in the very early stage of development, with X-Men: The Last Stand and Ready Player One director Zak Penn in talks to write the initial treatment for whatever this project will be. However, original franchise creators Lilly and Laura Wachowski (who went by Andy and Larry Wachowski at the time The Matrix was made) are not currently involved in the project, and any potential involvement has yet to be determined.

Though the Wachowskis aren’t yet being brought in to help develop the project yet, it sounds like Warner Bros. would like to leave the door open for them to be involved. Reportedly, franchise producer Joel Silver came to Warner Bros. with the idea of bringing back The Matrix, but the studio is hesitant to have him involved for both his penchant for creating problems with the film’s budget, not to mention having a tense relationship with the Wachowskis. They likely wouldn’t be as hesitant if they didn’t want the Wachowskis to come on board at some point.

Beyond that, there are rumblings of Warner Bros. being interested in Michael B. Jordan starring in the movie, but since the project is in such an early stage of development, anything can happen before it’s actually heading towards production.

The Matrix Reboot

What Kind of Project Are We Looking At?

Unlike some franchises that get the reboot treatment, The Matrix essentially has a built-in narrative device for getting rebooted. In the original film series, part of the plot revolves around the fact that there have been several versions of The Matrix, and the entire system gets rebooted once Neo (Keanu Reeves) serves his purpose as The One. Therefore, it would be easy to begin a whole new narrative with new characters set within the same universes.

There’s also always the chance that this could be one of those legacy-quels that brings back some of the characters from the original franchise and incorporates them with new characters. Those kind of follow-ups have been hit or miss, but it would give an opportunity for Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne and Carrie-Anne Moss to reprise their roles. Reeves has even expressed interest in coming back to The Matrix franchise should an opportunity present itself; he could easily have the Morpheus role for a new iteration of The One. But he also says that the Wachowskis would have to write and direct it, so that may not be in the cards.

Neither a remake nor a legacy-quel may be the approach Warner Bros. takes though. The report of The Matrix reboot also indicates that Warner Bros. see the chance to follow in the footsteps of Disney and Lucasfilm’s approach to the Star Wars universe. The trade mentions a movie about a young Morpheus as an example, but that’s not an idea confirmed to be in the works at Warner Bros.

Consider me cautiously optimistic to see what Zak Penn can come up with for The Matrix reboot. At this point, you just have to hope for the best as Hollywood digs through all the popular franchises of decades past and tries to create new fanbases for them.

Has Warner Bros. Found Their Shazam Director?

It looks like WB has found a Shazam director! Do you think David F. Sandberg will be a good Shazam director?

Warner Bros. appears to have found a Shazam director in Lights Out’s David F. Sandberg

It appears that a Shazam director has been found as The Wrap today reports that Lights Out helmer David F. Sandberg is prepared to call upon the strength of Hercules, the stamina of Atlas, the power of Zeus, the courage of Achilles, and the speed of Mercury for the DC Comics adaptation. Sandberg, who made his feature film debut with Light Out (based on his own original short), is also the director behind Warner Bros.‘ upcoming Annabelle 2. Horror fans can likely take away from this news that the August 11 The Conjuring sequel spinoff sequel is looking solid at the studio.

Created in 1939 by artist C. C. Beck and writer Bill Parker, Shazam first appeared in Fawcett Comics’ Whiz Comics #2. By saying the world “Shazam,” teenager Billy Batson was transformed into the “world’s mightiest mortal” and given extraordinary abilities by ancient gods. Originally known as Captain Marvel, legal disputes between DC and Marvel comics over the decades led to the hero receiving an official name change in 2011.

The Shazam movie is set to star Dwayne Johnson as Black Adam and will take place in the same cinematic universe as Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad.

“Shazam! is to live in the same world,” said Johnson’s manager and producing partner in a recent conversation with Newsweek, but we have incredible autonomy over this brand and franchise. We are working with a different team, different producers, directors… it’s a different set-up… We don’t feel fettered by, or constrained by, the successes or failures and challenges of the other projects. That was a key component to our participation—that we be able to control the tone and the voice, and do it the way we want to… We’re getting [script] drafts in… it’s important to make sure we get the tone right for Black Adam, which is Dwayne’s part.”

Jack the Giant Slayer scribe Darren Lemke is penning the script for Shazam. Shazam was previously announced for an April 5, 2019, just a month before Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War Part II. Johnson previously teased on social media, however, that the film could arrive earlier than that.

What do you think of David F. Sandberg as the Shazam director? Who do you want to see in the title role? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!

Editorial: Warner Bros Needs to Expand the DCEU Beyond Batman

Ben Affleck - Batman

At the climax of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Superman has literally fallen into the arms of his love, Lois Lane. The ending is far from romantic, however, as Batman and Wonder Woman stand beside the slain hero, heads bowed mournfully. Who knew this downer of an ending would signify more than just defeated heroes, it also acts as an analogy for the entire trajectory of DC Comics on film. By the time Suicide Squad rolled around, you could argue the DC Extended Universe had been put on suicide watch. For Ben Affleck, what started as a co-starring role has morphed into possibly being the DCEU’s only saving grace. ›››

‘Super Mario Bros.’ Is Coming To Blu-Ray, Putting The Disaster In High-Definition

Super Mario Bros Blu-Ray

UPDATE: We’ve been told this release actually isn’t anything more than an updated version of a 2014 high-definition release with a new Steelbook case. Still, for those who didn’t know this existed, this might be good news.

It’s no secret that the film adaptation of Super Mario Bros. is a complete disaster. The making of the total mess of a video game movie was documented in Blake J. Harris’ book Console Wars (you can read all about it right here). But somehow, there are enough fans of the movie to warrant a release of the movie in high-definition.

Believe it or not, Super Mario Bros. is getting a Blu-ray release next month, and it even has a collectible Steelbook case to keep it safe from anyone who would be crazy enough to steal it for their own collection.

Here’s the artwork for the Super Mario Bros Blu-ray coming next month:

Super Mario Bros Blu-Ray

The potentially bad news is that this Super Mario Bros. Blu-ray appears to only be getting a release in the United Kingdom by way of the retailer Zavvi (via Comic Book Resources). There’s no indication that this will be made available in the United States. You can still buy it for £15.99, or $ 19.75, and have it shipped to the US, but it’s a Region 2 disc, so unless you have a player that can handle those discs, you won’t be able to play it in the US.

But if you have the ability to watch it, you’ll get one cool special feature along with the movie. There will be a new 60-minute documentary with interviews from co-directors Rocky Morton and Annabel Jankel, producer Roland Joffe, writer Parker Bennett, production designer David Snyder, art director Walter Martishius, effects artists Paul Elliot, Vincent Guastini and Rob Burman, visual effects designer Chris Woods, editor Mark Goldblatt, creature designer Patrick Tatopoulos and actors John Leguizamo and Richard Edson. It will also include archived interviews with Bob Hoskins and Jake Eberts.

It’ll be interesting to see if all the filmmakers acknowledge the problems reported on the set of the film in this documentary or if they just gloss over those details. Considering there’s no denying the poor outcome of this movie in pretty much every regard, I hope they lean into it and discuss what went wrong instead of just being a typical making-of documentary.

Nintendo has a lot of exciting things happening right now. Super Mario Run was downloaded more than 40 million times in just four days on Apple’s App Store, the video game company has a Super Nintendo World theme park in the works, and there’s even the possibility of seeing some new movies based on Nintendo properties happening at some point.

If you want to know if this release is worth the money, check out a review right here.

The Super Mario Bros. Blu-ray Steelbook arrives in the United Kingdom on February 13, 2017.
