Cameron’s Next Set of ‘Avatar’ Sequels Rescheduled Again Until 2020

Avatar

The wait continues! Over the weekend, 20th Century Fox updated a few release dates for upcoming projects, and also announced a new set of release dates for the Avatar sequels. We’ve been waiting years, and years, for these sequels and we’re not sure when exactly they will show up… But maybe this time it’s official? Only Cameron knows. Fox has announced the first Avatar sequel (Avatar 2) will open December 18th, 2020, followed by Avatar 3 on December 17th, 2021, continuing three years later with 4 on December 20th, 2024, and finally concluding with 5 on December 19th, 2025. It starts three years from now, and goes for 5 years to see it all play out. Oh boy. This is worse than waiting a few years for Lord of the Rings! But this is expected from James Cameron, and at least they’ve announced something – we’ll see if it holds up this time. ›››

All Four ‘Avatar’ Sequels Receive New Release Dates as Production Begins

Avatar

It’s become a running joke by now: they set a date for Avatar 2 and then, after months (or years!) of nothing, it gets delayed. The sequel to the highest grossing film of all time was originally supposed to arrive in 2014…and then it was pushed back to 2016…and then it was pushed back to 2018. So when writer/director James Cameron revealed that the film wasn’t going to meet that last date, no one even blinked. Of course Avatar 2 wasn’t going to be released next year!

Because it’s going to be released in three years. Production has officially begun on the four sequels to the 2009 original, with the first movie now due out in 2020.

The news was revealed on the official Avatar Facebook page, where Cameron posed for a picture with his crew and announced the start of concurrent production on Avatar 2, Avatar 3, Avatar 4, and Avatar 5. There have been many conversations about whether or not audiences will care about this series by the time a new one arrives, but Cameron is a wily fellow – whether we want them or not, four more Avatar movies are coming and they’re filming at the same time.

Avatar 2 is due out on December 18, 2020 and Avatar 3 will follow a year later on December 17, 2021. After a three year gap, Avatar 4 will arrive on December 20, 2024 and Avatar 5 will wrap everything up on December 19, 2015. Here’s the official statement:

Great to be working with the best team in the business! Avatar takes flight as we begin concurrent production on four sequels. The journey continues December 18, 2020December 17, 2021December 20, 2024 and December 19, 2025!

This announcement arrives at a key moment for this franchise. Walt Disney World is set to open the Pandora: The World of Avatar next month and all eyes are on it, with pop culture enthusiasts and major corporations alike wondering if it will draw the same kind of attention as other recent theme park endeavors. In the unlikely event that tourists simply reject Pandora, Cameron will still have the last laugh – cameras have already started rolling.

And while one of the internet’s major pastimes involves everyone rolling their eyes at the original Avatar, you can’t ignore that $ 2.7 billion gross and you can’t ignore the fact that James Cameron has always been one step ahead of just about everyone else in Hollywood’s orbit. He’s always given the people what they want and he’s always proved his naysayers wrong. I’m the camp that enjoys Avatar but also can’t say I’m ecstatic about four sequels at the moment. However, I look forward to Cameron making me care. He’s pretty, pretty good at that.

All Four Avatar Sequel Release Dates Confirmed!

All Four Avatar Sequel Release Dates Confirmed!

All four Avatar sequel release dates confirmed!

Since the first Avatar arrived in 2009 James Cameron has been hard at work on a follow-up which has grown from one sequel to two to three and now four movies, whose release dates have been in flux and delayed with frequency. Now, 20th Century Fox and Lightstorm Entertainment have announced the release dates for all four of the films via the official Avatar Facebook page along with a photo of James Cameron and his cast and crew!

“Great to be working with the best team in the business! Avatar takes flight as we begin concurrent production on four sequels. The journey continues December 18, 2020, December 17, 2021, December 20, 2024 and December 19, 2025!”

Cameron previously spoke about the undertaking of making all four sequels at the same time in an interview with The Star when it was revealed Avatar 2 wouldn’t arrive in 2018, saying:

“What people have to understand is that this is a cadence of releases. So we’re not making Avatar 2. We’re making Avatar 2, 3, 4 and 5. It’s an epic undertaking. It’s not unlike building the Three Gorges dam. (Laughs) So I know where I’m going to be for the next eight years of my life. It’s not an unreasonable time frame if you think about it. It took us four-and-a-half years to make one movie and now we’re making four. We’re full tilt boogie right now. This is my day job and pretty soon we’ll be 24-7. We’re pretty well designed on all our creatures and sets. It’s pretty exciting stuff. I wish I could share with the world. But we have to preserve a certain amount of showmanship and we’re going to draw that curtain when the time is right.”

Confirmed to feature the return of cast members Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang and Sigourney Weaver, the Avatar sequels will be produced by Cameron and Jon Landau through their Lightstorm Entertainment. The sequels are written by Cameron along with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, Josh Friedman, and Shane Salerno, which Cameron will direct.

Sequel Bits: ‘Kingsman 2,’ ‘Blade Runner 2049,’ ‘Jurassic World 2,’ ‘Avatar’ Sequels

Kingsman Golden Circle Channing Tatum

In this edition of Sequel Bits:

  • New Kingsman: The Golden Circle pictures feature a suave Taron Egerton and Channing Tatum.
  • Barkhad Abdi sheds light on his Blade Runner 2049 character.
  • Chris Pratt hints at a “darker” Jurassic World 2.
  • Zoe Saldana teases the next four Avatar sequels.
  • Disney unveils Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales international posters.
  • Empire has a stylish limited edition cover of Alien: Covenant.
  • New French posters of Cars 3 race online.

The American equivalent of the posh British spies in Kingsman: The Golden Circle are as red, white and blue as you can get without actually donning the colors. Channing Tatum plays a lasso-wielding, cowboy-hat-wearing spy named Agent Tequila from the American Statesman organization, who Taron Egerton’s Eggsy must team up with in order to defeat a new ruthless enemy.

Halle Berry and Jeff Bridges also make suave, button-downed appearances in the new photos for the Kingsman: The Secret Service sequel — yes, that is a beardless, nearly unrecognizable Bridges frowning while sipping whisky.

Barkhad Abdi Captain Phillips

Barkhad Abdi, the villainous star from Captain Phillips, finally revealed the character he’ll be playing in Denis Villeneuve‘s Blade Runner sequel, set decades after Ridley Scott’s original film. Abdi will be playing a “totally deformed” scientist, he told the Hollywood Reporter, though he was vague on whether he’d be helping or hindering Ryan Gosling‘s Officer K in the search for Harrison Ford‘s Rick Deckard. Abdi will be joining a cast that also includes Robin Wright, Dave Bautista and Jared Leto.

jurassic world

Jurassic World may have had some shocking and brutal moments for a blockbuster film, but Chris Pratt promises that the sequel will be even “darker.” He points to Jurassic World 2 director J.A. Bayona’s expertise in the horror realm — the Spanish director’s first film was horror film The Orphanage — as a sign that the dinosaur sequel will be upping the stakes and the scares. At a press junket for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Pratt told ScreenRant:

Aw man, J.A. Bayona? Do you know that filmmaker? He’s a remarkable filmmaker. If you haven’t seen The Impossible or A Monster Calls, I mean he’s really visually masterful. Deep emotions and suspense. I think it’s going to be a scarier version. A little bit darker and will continue to expand and carry the story forward in a way that is really unexpected and you wouldn’t have imagined.

Avatar 2 Release Date

The long wait is over for the Avatar sequels, according to star Zoe Saldana. Saldana, who stars as the blue-skinned Na’vi princess Neytiri, confirmed to ScreenRant that not only will Cameron and crew begin filming Avatar 2 this summer — co-star Sigourney Weaver had recently confirmed a fall start date with some excitement, but who’s keeping track — but they will start work on the next three sequels as well. Zaldana said:

“We haven’t shot it yet. Anything I can tell you about Avatar 2,3,4,5? We’re going to start this summer. Late summer, and it’s probably going to go all the way until early next year shooting, and I’m really excited about it.”

First ‘Avatar’ Land Ride Footage Arrives Online

avatar ride footage

For the past three years, we’ve slowly watched Walt Disney World’s Pandora: The World of Avatar transform from a giant dirt pile into a jaw-dropping recreation of the alien jungle seen in James Cameron’s Avatar. Now, we’re on the homestretch, flying toward the theme park land’s May 27, 2017 opening, and first footage from the interior of one the area’s two main attractions has arrived online.

The footage comes from the Twitter account of Visit Pandora, a promotional campaign assembled by Alpha Centauri Expeditions. This is the travel agency of choice if you want to book a trip to the dangerous and beautiful world of the Na’vi. On other words, it’s part of the marketing for Pandora: The World of Avatar and like the Visit Pandora website, the Twitter account is committed to staying “in-character.”

So while the text says “here’s a cute joke pretending that Pandora is real,” the attached video says “hey, here’s the first actual footage from the Na’vi River Journey attraction.”

The video is conspicuously lacking sound, which may be by design. The official description of the ride teases the “Na’vi Shaman of Songs” who “fills the forest with beautiful music,” which suggests that the Na’vi River Journey is very much a next-gen version of It’s a Small World and Pirates of the Caribbean – a slow boat ride past enchanting visuals set to catchy music. Here’s that description:

Climb aboard a reed boat and soon you’ll see that on the sacred Kaspavan River, every moment tells a story, and every bend sings a song. This expedition into the rainforest deep within the Valley of Mo’ara will take you right into the middle of Pandora and Na’vi culture. Traveling into the darkest part of the forest, you’ll find yourself surrounded by a canopy of exotic glowing plants and amazing animals on the move. Listen closely and you’ll hear the Na’vi Shaman of Songs as she fills the forest with beautiful music about the sacred bond between nature and ourselves. Beyond any family adventure you’ve had before—that’s the Na’vi River Journey.

Of course, the technology on display looks first-rate. In the slow pan across the scenery, you can see at least a few minor animatronic creatures living amongst the bioluminescent flora, but those larger creatures seen near the end appear to be (very convincing!) projections. Since we already know there will be at least one full-sized Na’vi animatronic (the Shaman of Songs herself), it looks like the Na’vi River Journey will feature a combination of practical robots and projections.

Pandora: The World of Avatar will open with one other major ride: the banshee flying simulator Flight of Passage. The exterior of the land, which features a recreation of those floating mountains from the film, will offer different experiences depending on whether you visit during the day or at night. We’ll know more in just a few months when the land opens at the Animal Kingdom park in Florida’s Walt Disney World.
